Ronald M. Kavanaugh CBV, CPA, CMA

Managing Director

Ron leads management and execution of ALTAIR CAPITAL’S merger, acquisition and divestment practice. He is responsible for the quality and delivery of the firm’s accredited and sanctioned (CBV Institute) business valuation reporting practice including litigation support engagements.

He has testified in Federal Tax Court as an expert witness in the field of business and securities valuation and provided litigation support to several legal proceedings in the areas of taxation and damage quantification. 

Pricing and Business Valuation Reporting advisory services are rendered for mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, dispute resolution, income tax, estate matters, and several other client contexts.

Ron began his career in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures after earning his Chartered Business Valuator designation (CBV) in 1995 (National Silver Medalist) through the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV). His range of expertise and abilities include accredited business valuation, risk analysis and mitigation, Canadian income taxation, corporate finance, transaction structuring, data mining, financial reporting and statistical analysis. He has provided advisory services in fabrication, manufacturing and processing, financial services, crude oil pipelines, oil and gas resource production and development, offshore drilling services, energy services, wholesale and distribution, precious and base metals mining, enterprise software and SAAS, health sciences, high and low technologies, retailing, wholesaling, agriculture, residential and commercial building construction, contractor services and fabrication, professional practices, seismic and several others. Moreover, valuation studies have been compiled in a wide scope of tangible and intangible asset groups including those of some of the largest and most complex Canadian and foreign corporations. For more than nine years he worked in corporate and personal income tax compliance acquiring deep knowledge of Canadian Income Tax law.  His professional experience over more than thirty years has covered a wide spectrum of industry sectors and types of financial securities.

Ron obtained his Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary.  He is a member in good-standing with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta.

Alejandro Carvallo P.Eng., MBA, ICD.D

Director - South America and US Purchaser Market Coverage

Alejandro has managed construction companies all over North and South America as a General Manager and Executive Vice-President for more than 28 years. His success in leading the business of engineering construction has resulted in negotiation, strategic planning and risk oversight skills that carry substantial value and are adaptable to varied and complex situations. Alejandro has negotiated hundreds of millions of dollars in contracted commercial arrangements in Canada, U.S., Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Costa Rica.

He is a Civil Engineer, holds a Masters in Business Administration and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School. Mr. Carvallo owns majority and minority investments in several private companies both domestic and abroad in the engineering, construction, oil and gas, pressure vessel manufacturing, and real estate sectors. Over many years, he has also acquired investment positions in Colombia and Chile. He serves as a Member of the Board of Directors for certain of those companies and has also been a Board Member for different non-profit organizations.

Stephanie Sterling P.Eng., MBA., ICD.D

Ms. Sterling brings over 30 years of executive leadership and experience in engineering, large project start up and operations, corporate governance, joint venture negotiations and relationships, risk management, business development and strategic planning.

She served as the General Manager for Non-Technical Risk Integration, Community and Indigenous Relations for Shell in Canada, the USA, and Latin America where she was responsible for integrating risk management into new projects.

Stephanie served as the Vice President Business and Joint Ventures for Shell’s Heavy Oil Business, where she was responsible for the joint venture governance, commercial negotiations and relationships for two significant joint ventures: the Athabasca Oil Sands Project among Shell, Chevron and Marathon; and the AERA Joint Venture in California between Shell and Exxon.

Ms. Sterling continues to serve as a Director of the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (Crown Board) and Lead Director for Cardinal Energy Ltd.

She holds a Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering) Degree, Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Alberta, and ICD.D Designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

ALTAIR CAPITAL has aligned its mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and business valuation practices with Ms. Lisa Handfield.  Lisa practices law in Calgary, Alberta focusing as a general practice Barrister and Solicitor in corporate law, commercial litigation, wills and estates, estate planning, probates, estate litigation, tax law, tax dispute resolution and family law.

She obtained her Bachelor of Law degree at the University of Calgary and Masters of Law degree specializing in tax law from York University in 2009 and 2011 respectively.  She also holds the designation Trust and Estate Practitioner.  Lisa became a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants in 2007. 

With over 10 years of work experience that includes working for the Canada Revenue Agency Appeals division, in-house for a large corporation, and working with high-net worth clients of a major bank, Lisa provides an invaluable resource for our clients. Our alignment enables clients of Altair Capital direct access to a wide comprehensive scope of professional legal competence with a view to expedient client solutions.

Commercial Real Estate Valuation Advisory

Terry is the Managing Partner (Calgary) of Bourgeois Brooke Chin Associates .  He has over 40 years of real estate valuation experience.  He has worked as a commercial fee appraiser since 1979 in Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba. He has served the Appraisal Institute of Canada as a Professional Competency Interviewer (PCI) since 2011, and currently serves on the Investigating Sub-Committee and the Advocacy Sub-Committee. In November 2016 he was awarded an MSc in Real Estate Investment and Finance from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland.
